Facebook: Unfriend Coal and URL hacks

March 2nd, 2011

The oldest URL hack I can think of is Slashdot.org — that’s “slash-dot-dot-o-r-g”.

For the Greenpeace campaign to get Facebook to become a climate leader, we’ve made a URL hack of sorts. Normally Greenpeace will only promote greenpeace.org/something URLs — we suffered from domain-name-sprawl in the past, and we don’t want to go there again. This time though, just this once, we’re hoping people will visit and share a link which, well, like any good URL hack, really says something about the internet destination:

Irish Gov, stop domain name sprawl

November 28th, 2010

This idea won’t save the government 15 billion EUR over four years, but it will save them some money, while - more importantly - making it far easier to access information they publish online. Simply, instead of launching a new project-name.ie website every few weeks, they should stick to gov.ie/project-name URLs instead. I’ll explain why tomorrow.

So, I’ve inserted a photo of Robin as a baby (he’s two years old today - no longer a baby!). If this theme - monotone 1.1 - works as it says on the tin, it should adjust to the colour pallet of the image.

Did it work?

Burst of creativity

Collage I made yesterday

Yesterday I had a bit of a creative burst, and made this collage, tried my hand at making biscuits (they tasted like porridge - need more sugar), and repaired Robin’s chest of drawers.

Besides that, I also tried to bring Robin’s eMate back to life (battery dead). He only wants to play with the real computers that mummy and daddy use, and doesn’t get how retro cool his little green Apple laptop is.

Support DemocracyNow, it is an exceptional resource

December 28th, 2009

I’ve been listening to and watching Amy Goodman’s DemocracyNow on the web for years. The MP3 podcast about StoryCorps this week brought me to tears on my bike ride home today. Listen or watch it here.

Pacifica Radio is listener-supported radio, much like the way Greenpeace works. They don’t take money from corporations and government grants, and as a consequence they are free to run shows like DemocracyNow, which report stories you either don’t normally hear, or you only get a distorted version of in mainstream media. Click the big red DONATE button on their website to keep it going and growing in 2010.

lomo-effect with GIMP script

June 16th, 2009

There are a few scripts for the GIMP (free vector graphics app for Linux/Win/Mac) to give photos that “lomography/holga look”. Here’s a webcam pic from Greenpeace’s Arctic Sunrise webcam which was given the lomo treatment: http://www.flickr.com/photos/eoin/3632424746/

One great thing about these scripts is that you can use them (alone or in combination with other GIMP scripts) from the command line too. So you process lots of photos automatically, or with just one command. Another application can even give the command (and then do something with the output — like publish it or email it somewhere).
